Harris County Shelter In Place Day #6; March 30, 2020

Hope Monday has treated you well.  Give yourself a "high five" for making it through another day of "Shelter in Place".

Continue to keep healthcare workers on the front line, which will include a runner from Montgomery County who is a clinician that will be going to New York City for three weeks to help and try to contain things, in your prayers as well as those who are being negatively impacted economically from this crisis.

One of the reasons why I tend to keep from engaging too much on social media even more during this crisis is because when I see people make statements such as "it will this, it will that", my reaction is:  "You actually really don't know.  So please just take care of your family and deal with this all day by day."

If you need help, please reach out to me or somebody.

I'm sure there are plenty of folks who will do what they can to help people, like the runner I mentioned above.

I share the things I do to provide you items that I find interesting while I go through the day and night coping with what we're facing without putting it upon you in a Facebook or Twitter feed.

If you're interested in it, there'll be links below to access the material on your own.

I got in a two-mile walk in my subdivision at about 3 p.m. and then three hours later, my daughter and I ran another 3.92 miles in Springwoods Village.

So from March 25 (my 30-day starting period) to today, I'm at 11.99 miles running and 21.44 miles walking (that is, with an effort enough to break a sweat).

As most of you know, I'm a big lover of sports.

One of my good friends, David Fuller with the Lone Star Christian Sports Network (LSCSN), sent a text about Tarleton State hiring Billy Gillispie to be its next men's head basketball coach.

I think this is a great hire.  I had a chance to see his Ranger College team, which was ranked number two in the country, I believe, at that point, beat Panola College on the road in Carthage in late December.

Here's the story - from the Bryan-College Station Eagle - about Gillispie interviewing with Tarleton State.

Here's the report - from KBTX in College Station - confirming the hire.

For my running friends, a light-hearted, in the same boat kind of podcast to listen to this week comes from Trail Runner Magazine.

The podcast host, Zoe Rom, gathered trail and ultrarunners' top DNFs in their lives as a way to laugh through the cascading announcements on cancellations that we as runners and triathletes have been facing with the coronavirus crisis.

You can listen to it here.

Before going to bed last night, I stumbled on a podcast from a site called "Revisionist History".

It states that it "will go back and reinterpret something from the past: an event, a person, an idea. Something overlooked. Something misunderstood."

The title, given the state of affairs that we're in, caught my attention.  It was called "The Obscure Virus Club".

The episode has the following introduction:  "Throughout the 1970s, a biologist named Howard Temin became convinced that something wasn’t right in science’s understanding of viruses. His colleagues dismissed him as a heretic. He turned out to be right — and you’re alive today as a result."

It was a fascinating discussion about David Baltimore, Howard Temin and Robert Gallo and retroviruses.  Gallo was the co-discoverer of HIV and he became interested in the study of retroviruses, and made their study the primary activity of his lab after listening to a talk by biologist David Baltimore and further stimulation from his virologist colleague, Robert Ting, concerning the work of the late Howard Temin, Gallo (Wikipedia)

Listen to it here.

By the way, there's a pathway named after Howard Temin up north … it is used for one of America's 40-plus parkrun 5Ks.

A video was shared yesterday by an incredible athlete friend of mine that lives in Colorado who used to live here in the greater Houston area.

It was recorded on March 22 by Dr. Dave Price of Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City shares CRUCIAL information on how we can stop the spread and get back to normal, well, kinda normal. His experience with the virus and people infected for the last three months has given him great confidence on how not to get infected. Rules to protect yourself and family. It's a must watch!

You can watch it on YouTube here.

These were a few other podcasts that I had a chance to listen to since last evening:

Harris County Shelter In Place Day #5; March 29, 2020

How was your Sunday?  Hope you made it through the first weekend of our Shelter in Place here in Harris County - and elsewhere perhaps - OK.

I had a chance to explore an additional pathway or two where I currently run and walk.  It was nice.

I'll make it back there soon, more than likely sometime next week.  I certainly hope that you'll find some time to get outside of your residence and move a little bit.

Shout-outs to Paul Alli and Bill Dwyer for getting out the bike and putting down three miles on the track, respectively.

Certainly many things to keep in your prayers these days, including those that are on the front line of the public right now in those essential businesses.

Many, even more so first responders, of course, are putting their lives on the line in ways they never thought they would.

Thankfully my family is making it through things OK.

The first couple of posts were a bit whimsical in nature, but I just wanted to share some of the things that I've been reading and/or looking at, without buying into the 24-hour news cycle that is very easy to become saturated by.

Had my normal Whataburger breakfast, across FM 2920 from my house, but I went into Springwoods Village and had a solid 5.37-mile walk, enough effort to break a sweat on a pleasant day outside.

I've been working on cataloging a lot of magazines that I've held on to over the years.  They are linked over on the right-hand side of this blog.

If there's an issue that you might think that you like, please drop me a note.  I'm interested in passing some of these along (within reason).

Asking for a Penn State or Steelers cover might be too big of an ask.  :-)

I made a quick trip to HEB, also across the road, for a couple of things, and for the first time, a lot of things were picked over.

To my surprise, the bread aisle looked pretty good, but, of course, have no clue when that food comes in.

I also put in 30 minutes on my Air Assault bike and started in, while doing so, on the book that I just had delivered on the schools that Julius Rosenwald and Booker T. Washington worked together on to establish schools for African-Americans in the segregated south before 1970.

Below are things that I've been reading that I've been both informed and/or encouraged by.  Both sentiments could apply.

Some wise words from Clemson reserve running back Darien Rencher (something along the lines of what I shared from Dr. Charles Stanley yesterday):

If my family had stayed in Pennsylvania (instead of moving to Texas), I might have graduated from Tyrone in 1984 with Steve Bonta.  He shared his perspective of living in China and being in Shanghai as word arrived about COVID19 spreading from Wuhan.  Read it here.

Country singer Joe Diffie passed away on Sunday from complications from the coronavirus.  Sad.

As I shared the story from the Tennessean on my Facebook page and here, the first song I ever played in my pickup truck when I used to have it was Joe Diffie's "Pickup Man"

Interesting Texas history podcast.  This talked about the two cannons that friends of the Texas Republic in Ohio sent to be used by the Republic Army.

The official entry from the Texas State Historical Assocation can be found here.

When I have race announced over the years or have acted in media relations or journalistic roles, people have commented at times about me having some form of encyclopedic knowledge.

I would allege that there are, at times, along with the God-given abilities, opportunities to practice the type of knowledge acquisition that I do.

One example of that is reading an old magazine or book.

Today, I had reason to grab the first publication on the top of a stack and it was a 1981 edition of a magazine that didn't last too long.

It was known as Texas Sports, but looking back it really contained a ton of great information.  I probably didn't even really realize it at the time.

These are the articles in that edition that I read today.

May 1981 edition of Texas Sports

+ College:  (Stanley) Floyd joins (Carl) Lewis in Houston's speed show
+ Interview:  Don Zimmer by Randy Galloway
+ Sportswoman:  A&M softball team pushing for national title
+ High School:  Solutions or just more problems? by Bill McMurray
+ North Texas:  Hard work, dedication built White Oak track dynasty
+ South Texas:  Helmet put athlete back in action
+ West Texas:  Texas' winningest baseball coach
+ Central Texas:  Baseball players start young in Brenham
+ Amateur:  Texas' powerlifting champion, Rick Gaugler still putting on weight
+ Texas Sports Hall of Fame:  Where the memories of Lone Star legends are kept alive

The high school article, authored by the legendary Bill McMurray, discussed the addition of the second team in the UIL playoffs starting with the 1982 season and how it was introduced for consideration by El Camp football coach Buzzy Keith.  It also discussed about how soccer got voted in as a UIL sport for the 1983 season, but votes on wrestling and gymnastics failed.  (Wrestling, obviously, later would be added as an official UIL sport some time later.)

The "South Texas" story was about Little Cypress-Mauriceville athlete Cazzy Francis, who suffered a head injury in a 1980 boating accident.  The story was about how he would wear a modified hockey helmet for the 1980-1981 season with hopes of being cleared to play football again.

(Today, he is the Senior Pastor of a church that he planted in Nederland called Pathway Church Mid County.  His bio on the church's web site that he attended Arkansas State on a football scholarship and eventually signed a free-agent contract with Tampa Bay in 1987.)

The "West Texas" piece was about the success of Bobby Moegle, Lubbock Monterey's baseball coach who eventually would be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.  A Waco Tribune Herald story said that "the 79-year-old Moegle is the winningest high school baseball coach in Texas history and currently ranks fifth nationally with 1,115 victories. He was 1,115-266-1 in 40 seasons at Lubbock Monterey, from 1960 to 1999."

Gaugler would turn out to be a 2010 inductee of the United States Powerlifting Federation Hall of Fame.

And the Sportswoman piece about the Aggie's women softball team revealed that then head coach Bill Galloway has been a long-time assistant at East Texas Baptist University after a long run of success at Louisiana Tech.  One of their top opponents then was Texas Women's University, which abandoned its program in 1981.  One of their players transferred to Cal State Fullerton, Kathy Van Wyk, and she has had a long, successful career as the head coach at San Diego State University.

Nevertheless a good, yet quiet day, but sad to see the carnage that this virus is leaving behind across the world.

Appreciate you following along.  Hope you find these updates enjoyable and interesting.

Harris County Shelter In Place Day #4; March 28, 2020

Today was one of those days that I've feared about for a long time:  having nothing to be able to go and do.

I've responded to people about my level of busyness that "I didn't know how to sit still for long" or "I fear that I would be wasting my life away."

Well, slowing down for once, wasn't all that bad today.

I stayed in bed a little bit longer than I might have on any other Saturday, but I recovered in time to walk across FM 2920 to get my #21 breakfast Whatameal from Whataburger.

While there I learned from the maintenance guy that the folks in Montgomery County were serious about the curfew that the County Judge there enacted.   He said that he lives near 242 and 1314 and that he has to leave somewhere between 1 and 2 a.m. to go to the store here in Spring.

He said the first morning law enforcement turned on its lights on its car and stopped and questioned him about where he was going.  Whataburger had given him a letter, of course, and he was able to proceed without any further issues, but that this morning when he encountered the same officer at the same location at the same time and he said, when questioned, that he said the same place as yesterday that the officer got a little testy.

Guess everybody's sensitivities are up during a time like this, but honestly the maintenance guy - as well as almost all of the staff at this location - are all super nice people.

I asked him how business was for them and he just said that their numbers, as you can imagine, are down and vary by the day.  I told him I was doing my best to do my part.

Eventually, I worked on a couple of straightening up projects and about 12:30 p.m. I went over to Springwoods Village and ran my newly-constructed 4.41-mile course.  It was an OK run - averaged 10 minutes per mile, but I wouldn't have called it necessarily a "walk in the park" either.

The remainder of the day I've pretty much have spent the day reading, aside from a trip also across the road to H-E-B.

I guess I got there at a little bit of a busy time as we were social distancing six feet apart along the sidewalk outside of the store and new was that we either had to use a hand wipe or hand sanitizer before entering the store.  I get it, but still.  :-)

So what have I been reading regarding the Coronavirus crisis at hand?

Dan Patrick to Dan Patrick: Drop Dead [Texas Monthly] -- As he's been doing a lot since he was a sports anchor for KHOU here in Houston, he pretty much made a fool of himself on this item.

Expired Respirators. Reused Masks. Nurses in the Nation’s Original Covid-19 Epicenter Offer Sobering Accounts of What Could Come [ProPublica]

+ Urn deliveries in Wuhan raise questions about China's actual coronavirus death toll [Fox News] -- A friend recently told me that he believes nothing coming out of China.  Can't say that I disagree with him.  However, I don't find this surprising one bit.

+ What the Media Isn't Telling You About the United States' Coronavirus Case Numbers [PJ Media] -- Basically, the gist of the piece is that the media never looks at the statistics on a per capita basis and therefore, especially here in Texas, make things seem even worse than they are now.

+ Governors are starting to close their borders. The implications are staggering.  [Vox]

And the following was something that I stumbled across that I found insightful:

Critical Condition [Texas Observer]

This is about the rural health care crisis in Texas.

I also read three more pieces out of this month's Texas Monthly:

+ Your Filthy Pit Is Not "Seasoned" (Food & Drink)
+ Lone Star Populism (The Culture) -- An engaging and meticulously researched history of Texas Populism and its contributions to modern American liberalism
+ Is Climate Change Denial Thawing in Texas?  (News & Politics)

And my three most recently ordered books from Barnes & Noble arrived today.  They included:

+ "Where You Go:  Life Lessons from My Father" by Charlotte Pence
+ "You Need A Schoolhouse:  Booker T. Washington, Julius Rosenwald and the Building of Schools for the Segregated South" by Stephanie Deutsch
+ "Unafraid:  Trusting God in an Unsafe World" by Susie Davis

I decided to start with the latter one as it was referenced in this month's Texas Monthly story about a 1978 school shooting in Austin where the author was an eighth grade student, who along with her classmates, watched a fellow classmate walk in with a rifle and shoot their favorite teacher.  The book is about how she rebounded from the culture of fear that she manifest for decades after the shooting.

The middle one above, by Stephanie Deutsch, is about how a Jewish businessman helped Booker T. Washington build many schoolhouses for African-American students in the South in the 1900s.  I'm looking forward to reading this.  This was referenced in a recent edition of Texas Highways.

Pretty quiet day, but probably very well needed.

I did find out from a friend of mine who thought his nephew might have been diagnosed with COVID-19 instead was confirmed with having pneumonia.

I also took the opportunity to reach out and check in on a high school classmate of mine who I've maintained a friendship with over the years.  Their job has been impacted by that shutdown of non-essential businesses in Montgomery County so they are hoping that they can get back to work soon for they fear that they can't go too long with some form of income coming in.

I certainly hope that you and your family are taking care of yourself wherever you may be.

As always, thanks for your friendship.

Harris County Shelter In Place Day #3; March 27, 2020

Five o'clock came early this morning, but something occurred that I hope that I won't soon forget.

I was awaken by a dream of my grandfather, who passed away nearly six years ago.

He was full in the face, which would have been back at a time after he had retired from the railroad and weighed more than I ever remember, and there were two things that I distinctly remembered him saying.

Two things that were so juxtaposed on the surface, but they made sense.

He asked emphatically how Waverly was doing, as if he hadn't seen or heard from her in awhile.  Ok, that didn't make sense, because I think he generally knew at most times how she was doing.

However, in the latter stages of his life, he didn't say it often, but he expressed a desire to die.

It was similar to one time when I was home visiting that he looked at me in the eye from the other end of the table and clearly mouthed to me those words.  He was in radio and taught me about enunciating my words to speak clearly and lower my voice so there was never any chance then that I misunderstood him, but in the dream it was audible.

I was thankful for the memory.  I miss both of my grandparents and I'm glad that neither of them were burdened with what we're experiencing in these times currently.

Quiet day for the most part.  Work and in between I walked four miles in the neighborhood, while breaking up the day a little bit, and I got listed all of the covers of all of the old Sport Magazines that I still possess.  Still being an operative word.

There are some 25 years' worth of magazines.  If you have a favorite athlete that you collect memorabilia of and may wish to have the copy of the magazine that I do, please let me know and we can talk.  I don't know that I'm looking to sell them, but I may be in the process of looking to move some of them.

They can be found here:

Oh, on the first mile of the four, I walked by a car parked on the street.  The inspection/registration sticker read "03 17".  That's right, the car hasn't been inspected in three years!

At about noon today, I listened in on a webinar that the multinational company that I work for had regarding the COVID-19 crisis.  It was good.  At times, I've heard lots of negative things about my company, but what I heard I thought was wise and truthful.

An hour of so later, I also joined in on another good webinar.

This one was from the CDC and it was for clinicians entitled, "Underlying Medical Conditions and People at Higher Risk for Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)"

Nothing really new that was earth-shattering, but just to reiterate that age and underlying medical conditions should cause clinicians more concern for their patients.

One of the individuals that read my blog post yesterday decided to take it to heart and actually reached out and called me on the phone today.

We attended the same church for many years, shared an apartment for almost a year (I don't think we managed dishes too well or maybe that was just me then) and was a best man in my wedding in 1991.  It was good to hear from him and when we're allowed to unsocial distance again we plan to grab some Mexican food.  I'm sure there will be a few that'll be glad to have us.

So what have I been reading?

Here's three articles online regarding the virus situation -- one positive and two are of some concern, but written by organizations that wouldn't ever be accused of doing the administration's work for them.

In Texas, a midnight run across the Mexican border gets masks for doctors

They Didn’t Have Coronavirus Symptoms Until After They Gave Birth. Then They Tested Positive.

Mystery In Wuhan: Recovered Coronavirus Patients Test Negative ... Then Positive

One sports-related article regarding the postponement of the Olympics and how running influenced it.

How Running Led the Charge to Postpone the Olympics
You know things are bad when the athletes and USATF are on the same page

I found the following to be encouraging:

The first is written by The Woodlands' Bret Strong, one of the most notable lawyers in Montgomery County and The Woodlands, who is a man of faith with a beautiful family and a strong business, The Strong Firm.  He wrote something worth reading I thought (even if he might have taken issue with my use of "unprecedented").  :-)

What Does “Community” Look Like During Social Distancing?
The next is from one of the private and parochial schools we support and promote:

Need A Life Raft (in the Coronavirus Ocean)?  Be encouraged here (from our friends at Trinity School of Midland) and grab a book.

And, of course, always uplifting is the great Dolly Parton.

Check out her minute long video on Facebook here.

I may lose a reader or two on the following item, although I think most that follow me on social media think similarly.

I would consider, after the passing of Billy Graham recently, that Dr. Charles Stanley is probably now one of the country's most loved and respected ministers.

I found the entire podcast, if you will, entitled "Coronavirus: An Interview with Dr. Stanley" to be especially uplifting.

He thought that the crisis at hand is for us to see that "We recognize we need God."

The interviewer said that, "One of the children in our church sent a very thoughtful question - for a child - and I want to share it with you, "Could this virus be God's way of making us turn from our sin and follow his command."

"Absolutely yes," Stanley responded.

She quickly asked, "How?"

He said, "Because first of all we have a need that we don't have an answer for.  We have to look for God.  We have needs that we just can't purchase the answer for.  We have needs that we're not sure what exaclty it is going to take.  People are dying. People are getting sick.  The whole atmosphere has totally changed.  And what's the answer at this point?  Nobody has the answer but God.  He's getting our attention."

She recognized that one of Stanley's strength is his prayer life and she asked him how he is currently praying.  He responded with the following four items:

+ For God to "show us what you're saying to us."  That's the most important thing.  Not just get everybody healed.

+ For God to "be merciful to us.  Be merciful to us for people who don't know you."

+ For God to "use this to bring many people - multitudes of people - to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior."

+ So "your people will be faithful in these days as a demonstration to the unbeliever that God is faithful to his word.  He keeps us in his promises."

I also read a sad article in the January | February 2020 edition of the Texas Observer called "The Prison Inside Prison", which talked about Texas' use of solitary confinement, which currently has 18 inmates, according to the article, in "restrictive housing" for 30 or more years.  Amazing.

And after dinner, I went to Springwoods Village to walk another 3.66 miles.  7.66 for the day and 3.66 miles running and 14.07 miles walking the last three.

Hopefully I'll be able to keep it up.

Have a great weekend!

Harris County Shelter in Place Day #2; March 26, 2020

Before this week's call for a shelter in place order here in Harris County, I had thought I might be able to squeeze in one last running trip of counties by flying on Southwest to Amarillo tonight.

I figured I could have knocked out the ten counties that are at the top of the Texas Panhandle and I had even gone so far as to check the Amarillo Globe News website to see if there were any discussions along the lines of a shelter in place coming out there.

Nevertheless, thinking the worst on all accounts, I chose to cancel my flight as well as two others on Southwest for the second and third weeks of April to New Orleans and Tampa, respectively, for minor league baseball trips.

However, as I was walking Tuesday night, I've decided that it will now be one of my goals for 2020 - once we're able to move a bit more freely - is to finish that effort of running a mile or more in all 254 Texas counties - with 144 already behind me.

Seriously, though, this effort your reading is to add a bit of levity to the situation to take your mind off of some wild, crazy Facebook comments for a few minutes.

Honestly, some are like a highway accident along the road; you're so tempted to stop and look, but you realize in the end that it is just going to pull you down.

And, in this specific case, sometimes suck your soul out of you over things that may be best to be left alone.

My life isn't glamorous at all.  Pretty basic, but real.

My daughter and I discussed a few days ago that in a time that is new for so many, if not all, of us that it really is important - if you haven't been already - to wake up each day and to thank God to be alive for another day.

Work was pretty straight forward today.  Had two calls early in the morning.

My daughter had her regular 9 a.m. meeting with all of her class and she had commented to me that all of them were responding well and getting their work done:  second graders even!

I know that sometimes many teachers don't get the credit that they deserve, but my hope is that parents will - during this time - have a greater appreciation for what they do (and not just the sometime perception that they're just "babysitters".)

She told me that she really had one of the most encouraging e-mails from a parent that she has ever had in her short teaching career after watching her 9 a.m. Zoom session with her students.  I was really excited for and proud of her, of course.

Got out and walked 4.41 miles in Springwoods Village earlier this evening.

And one side benefit of this crisis that we're going through is that I've had more salad in the last two weeks than I have probably in five years (and longer if you don't count trips to Olive Garden).

Basically, I eat out a lot.  Almost exclusively.  Say no more.  I get that it isn't the best, but I never learned to cook more than the basics!

When I do, I have no problem - even though I'm a great introvert - going into any eating establishment and eating by myself.  It is just what I do.

I also do not really care to go through a drive-thru anywhere unless I absolutely have to - or am forced to.

So one of the things that I've found at H-E-B is that they really have some decent choices in single serving food, including salads.

I've been going daily to get what I want to eat for dinner each evening.

One day, at about 2 p.m. when I was going to go over, the H-E-B across FM 2920 from me had a line out the door.  Like, right, I'm going to wait in that?

I went to Kroger on Spring Stuebner and Holzwarth instead and they have very, very limited selection of anything similar.

Today, I bought a salad for tonight and tomorrow and my dinner for the next four or five nights.

I've got to say that the H-E-B across the road from me has done a really good job in getting the food supply chain at that location back to fairly normal and consistent.

For example, there was all kind of bread at 2:30 p.m. today.

And speaking of H-E-B, one really good read today that I shared on my Facebook page earlier is about how they positioned themselves for the current crisis that we're in.

You can read the Texas Monthly story here.

But are grocery employees putting themselves at risk?  Good article from the Texas Tribune here.

(Mostly everybody in the location across the road from me and the Kroger that I referenced do a good job of keeping their distance, but I've had one or two get a little too close for my comfort.)

And this article talks about a pretty cool effort underway across the nation at the direction of greater Houston's own KSBJ and NGEN Radio.

One really cool thing that I got to be a part of today is encouraging - through our Lone Star Christian Sports Network (LSCSN) - Texas private and parochial high schools to join many UIL public schools in turning on their stadium lights for an hour from 8 to 9 p.m. as a "symbolic gesture of hope".

Dallas Christian School responded to our tweet last night after seeing the following story from down in the Rio Grande Valley and became the first private school in Texas to do so.

Read more about the efforts in the Rio Grande Valley here.

Enough from me this evening.

Hug someone who you've agreed to share space with and check in on somebody that might need an encouraging word or two.

Thanks for your friendship.

Let's make Friday and the weekend great!

Harris County Shelter in Place Day #1; March 25, 2020

After years of hobbling along with a slow Internet connection, even with paying as much as I do, I decided on Monday to finally bite the bullet to upgrade.

I have Spectrum where I live and late last year I had a bad experience with somebody helping me from a technical standpoint as I tried to learn what all I needed to do - to do this upgrade - that I pushed it off.

When I have to be on a call with Microsoft Teams only and no dial-in number, I have had to go to another location to take that call.

A lot of times through the end of last year, it was my parents' place and more recently, I would just roll across FM 2920 from where I live and go to the McDonald's there.

As we've experienced in the last 10 days here in Texas, every eating establishment has been forced - for the right reasons - by state government to take out, curbside pickup or drive-through service.

However, I became more concerned about being able to travel to my parents, who only live 10 or so miles away, as what I do - although I am supporting a healthcare organization that has to stay running - might not fit the definition of an essential business.

My daughter would be OK - I would think - as she's a teacher.

Nevertheless on Monday I got the information I needed, explained to me so that I could understand it and subsequently I pulled the trigger.

Yesterday I went and picked up the equipment from their location at the front of my subdivision, came home and installed everything with only one minor hiccup -- the 100 MB connection hadn't been fully provisioned.

So we're fully wireless here and have been running a hard wire and a pair of wifi connections since then!

After getting up this morning, I satisfied a weakness of mine:  breakfast at Whataburger.

I have one of those across the road from me too!  Store #1045.

I ordered online and walked over to pick it up curbside instead of getting in my car and driving over.  (I finished all but the drink before I made it to my front door.)

I worked and my daughter did with her second grade students.

Mid-day, I got out and walked a mile just to break things up -- I have three different one-mile courses setup -- and then I walked across the road again to go get a few things from HEB.

There was at least an officer from the Houston Police Department there and perhaps another from another agency.  I think they might have been counting how many were in the store at one time as it seemed like there was only one of the two places for you to go in and out.

I get it, but it just seems like a waste of LEO resources, even if that HPD officer was doing it as a second job.

I mean, the paper towels and toilet paper were wiped out.  (Sorry, I couldn't resist the pun.)

And we're actually good there.  I bought large packages the last go-around not knowing what was coming, unlike some in the Trump administration.

Around 5 o'clock, I got out and walked another mile.

I had a salad about six and then my daughter and I ran in Springwoods Village on our new 3.66-mile run.

With the temperatures sitting at 80 degrees, one of the warmest days of the year so far in 2020, we averaged 10:09 per mile.

Before leaving and immediately after our return, I finished reading the following excerpt of a book on boxer Panama Al Brown, who I had never heard of before:

https://narratively.com/the-secret-story-of-the-groundbreaking-boxing-champ-who-lost-his-title-because-he-was-gay/

All in all, feeling a little accomplished today as I got all of my old college football programs - the oldest being back to 1971 - cataloged and on one of my blogs as well as moving all of my old cassette tapes to shoeboxes so that I could ditch the three cases that they were in.  (I need to find something that will play them still.)

But, finally, the coolest thing on the day was that my daughter was sharing with me that she and her second grade partner teacher shared separately with their classes today online - without coordinating with one another -- the exact same bible verse for the day.

So I'll close and leave you with this, Psalm 46:1, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
