Daily Devotionals - June 23, 2023

"It was a close call.  All I left her was my smile.  God gave me the strength to persevere against temptation ... at least for the time being." ~ Bruce Fong, page 27, "Real Life", Longings Keep Winter at Bay about resisting the sales pitch to buy a new motorbike, but with applications to any temptation.

"In doing so the Lord of the universe taught us that the best way to lead is by giving up our own selfish desires for the good of others.  Jesus could have clung to his riches in heaven - untold wealth that was rightfully his.  Instead, he made himself "nothing" and humbled himself even to the point of death on a cross.  And he calls his followers to imitate him with unselfish acts of love and devotion." ~ Hugh Poland, page 17, "Steal Away".

"The Holy Spirit's indwelling results in living water flowing.  God's love is poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. ... In this world that brings weariness each day, He energizes us.  And He helps us beat fruit to please God.  Pay attention to what He is prompting you to do this day.  Listen to Him so the rivers of life will flow through your life." ~ Gregg Matte, June 23, "Capture The Moment".

"God created all men equal.  All men are created in the image of God.  His one and only Son was given for all men, regardless of how they look.  Of that truth there is no debate." ~ Bruce Fong, page 25, "Real Life", Reflecting on the Great Debaters

"Even if you could have a blueprint of your future, it would probably be a hinderance to your faith.  What is most important is no that we know some sort of prophetic timetable, but that we understand how we are to live while we are waiting for Jesus to come back.  After all, if even Jesus does not when his Father will send him to earth a second time, then it will do us no good to speculate regarding dates and times.  Just seek to live each day as if the second coming of Christ could be today." ~ Hugh Poland, page 13, "Steal Away".

"To believe in Christ means to rest your full weight on Him, to have confidence that He is the One who will save you.  It means that when it is the long hot days od summer, you still know that the only way to be save, the only way to walk through the pearly gates, is by believing in Jesus." ~ Gregg Matte, June 20, "Capture The Moment".

Daily Devotionals - June 19, 2023

"Simple things in life that remind us of beauty and simplicity, give us balance in our hectic routine.  Water is one of those soothing reliefs that massage the soul.  Put some soothing water show in your routine.  It will make you smile." ~ Bruce Fong, page 23, "Real Life".

"What is true for fundamentals in baseball is also true in life.  A Christian cannot live life the way God meant it to be lived without practicing the fundamentals of the faith, namely studying the Word of God and engaging in prayer.  Something is missing at the center of the human heart when the One who is the Living Word is not enthroned there." ~ Hugh Poland, page 8, "Steal Away".

"We can get so thirsty in this world that we will take our legitimate need for God and try to satisfy it in things that are deadly for us.  Jesus is the living water.  He is the only way to satisfy your spiritual thirst." ~ Gregg Matte, June 19, "Capture The Moment".

Sermon Notes from 6/11/23 Visit to First Baptist Church of Victoria

Ephesians 4:31-32
Our faith embraces forgiveness.

Do you accept your forgiveness in Christ?
Do you appreciate it?

If so, we should extend it like Christ does.

We have two choices when offended:

1. Forgiveness
2. Bitterness

Ephesians 4:26 - Be angry and do not sin. Doesn’t mean that you can never be angry, which is a legitimate response. However, we’ve let the sun go down on a lot of anger.

We need to urgently take our anger and bitterness to God, so Satan doesn’t have a foothold in your soul.

Forgiveness is an act of worship.

Seven things forgiveness is:

Canceling a debt owed to you
Removing the control of your offender
A gift (to yourself and your offender)
Forsaking revenge (Romans 12:19)
Leaving ultimate justice to God
An ongoing process
Wanting good for your offender

Forgiveness is not:

Denying or diminishing sin
Enabling sin
Requiring an apology
Covering up sin
Forgetting (sometimes is impossible to forget, even though forgiveness is real)
Trust (forgiveness is a moment, but trust is earned and over time)
Reconciliation (both parties have to be involved)

Tap Out Ten; June 4, 2023

Where do I start?  Good weekend.

Couple of 5K's.  Couple of ballparks.  Hall of Fame.

However, sometimes it get old, even though I enjoy it.

But I have to get out of the house.

I work from home, and lately, I have to force myself out of the door each and every day.

Trying to be a little bit more careful with my diet to try and drop this weight that I've put on the last two years.

It's enough to add four minutes to my 5K time in Grandview on Saturday between 2021 and now, but I wasn't totally discouraged.

Why?  It was my best time for the distance this year through eight races.  Today was number nine in Burleson.

Great to see Kate with one of my favorite timers, Race Day Event Services.

Her and her family are great, salt of the earth people.

I was telling a gentleman from Arlington, whose son finished fifth and will be an eighth grader at a private school I cover, that many of the Texas cities that I've raced in are in towns that they have timed, like Gustine, Stephenville and Eastland.

Great stuff.

So now the plan is to start looking for this weekend.

I'll be in Waco Thursday and Friday for TAPPSCON and working from there, then I'll be home the following weekend:  Father's Day weekend.

My daughter invited me to go to church with her at Houston's First.  Will probably do that.  Am glad that she loves her Dad to invite me to go where her friends are now.  Speaks volumes, doesn't it?

I'm grateful.  Really am.

My private school friends, Dave and Dan; Bill; Catherine, who's helped me navigate some personal issues that I've dealt with in the athletic community ... these are people who, if I didn't have their time and counsel, I'm not really quite sure what I'd do, to be honest.

Just trying to figure out what in life I need to be doing to make a difference.

I feel like I added a lot via my announcing, but unfortunately, some producers - not the ones that I currently work for - have made that challenging over the last six years and are the reasons that I walked away from many assignments.

On the other hand, I saw my good friend (and his wife), the head track and field and cross country coach at an NCAA Division I school, on Monday and I announce two meets for him.

It is pretty powerful statement when a coach at that level tells you, "You're my guy until you decide that you don't want to anymore."  What better vote of confidence is that?  There's not too much, really.

Am grateful for all that I have and my life.  I've had some good days.  Memorial Day was one of them, but there was an item out of all of that that has presented some caution.  We'll see how that goes.
